Futey Family scholarships

The Futey Family Student Scholarship Fund was established to encourage and financially support talented students of the Master’s program in “Law”.
Every year, the competition committee selects two winners (one from the first and one from the second year of study) who perform well but are in a difficult financial situation, taking into account the following criteria:
1) an admission rating of not lower than 181 for 1st year students or an academic rating of not lower than 81 for 2nd year students;
2) conducting a research within the framework of a master’s course or qualification work on constitutional or public international law;
3) English language proficiency at a level not lower than B2 on the CEFR scale (upper-intermediate);
4) origin from Ternopil or Ivano-Frankivsk regions (in the absence of an applicant who comes from these regions and meets the above criteria, support may be provided to those from Lviv region).

The winner of the competition shall be paid charitable support in Ukrainian hryvnias in the amount equivalent to USD 1,000 in terms of the official exchange rate set by the National Bank of Ukraine on the day the competition committee decides to provide such support.

To participate in the competition, applicants should send an application form, Curriculum Vitae and a motivation letter to law@ukma.edu.ua. The form of the application is arbitrary, with detailed information in accordance with the criteria for determining the winner. The application must be accompanied by documents (copies thereof) confirming that the criteria for determining the winner are met (if necessary).

The founder of the Fund is Dr. Bohdan Futey, Doctor Emeritus of the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims (USA), and Visiting Professor at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”.

Judge Futey was born in Ukraine on June 28, 1939. He was nominated to become a Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims on January 30, 1987. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a bachelor’s degree in 1962 and a master’s degree in 1964; he received his Juris Doctorate in 1968 from Cleveland Marshall Law School.

Judge Futey previously served as Chairman of the United States Foreign Claims Settlement Commission from May 1984 until his appointment as a Federal Judge. Prior to that, he was a partner in the law firm of Bazarko, Futey & Oryshkevich from 1975 to 1984; Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Cleveland from 1974 to 1975; Chief Deputy Prosecutor of the City of Cleveland from 1972 to 1974; and a partner with the law firm of Futey & Rakowsky from 1968 to 1972.

Judge Futey is married to Myroslava Fur and has three children: a son, Andriy, and two daughters, Lidia and Daria. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Ukrainian American Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the District of Columbia, and the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Futey is the Visiting Professor of Legal Comparative Law at the Law School of the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” and Professor of Constitutional Law at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, and has lectured at the University of Passau (Germany), as well as at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Precarpathian University (Ivano-Frankivsk) and Transcarpathian State University (Uzhhorod).
