International Law for the Protection of Human Rights

The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of international legal universal and regional standards and mechanisms for the protection of human rights. A general overview of the main human rights treaties in the UN and Council of Europe system, as well as the human rights bodies established by them, is provided. The application of international human rights mechanisms in the context of armed conflicts and the protection of human rights by international criminal law are also considered separately. Focus is also laid on the operation of the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. International legal mechanisms for the protection of the rights of women, national minorities and indigenous peoples are analyzed. The ways of implementing international human rights law into Ukrainian legislation are considered. During the seminars, decisions of the UN Human Rights Committee and cases of the European Court of Human Rights are analyzed as well.
