Law in Germany

Professor Peter-Christian Müller-Graff is Senior Professor for Private Law, Economic Law and European Law at the Heidelberg University Law Faculty, Jean Monnet Professor ad personam and former Dean of the Heidelberg Law Faculty. He is Member of Academia Europaea and Honorary Chairman of the Association of the German Law Faculties. His main research interests comprise European internal market law, the legal order of the economy, European private law, the constitutional law of the European Union and other European international organisations and the international Treaties of the European Union. He has published and edited many books on these subjects, published many articles and commentaries and is editor of the ten-volume Encyclopedia on European Law (Enzyklopädie Europarecht). He has been awarded several honorary doctorates (Universities of Athens, Bergen, Budapest ELTE, Kiew Mohyla, Kraków) and orders of merit (Germany, Austria, Brasil, Merite Européen en or). Professor Müller-Graff is counselor to public authorities, was counselor to the Convention on the Future of the European Union and represented the Federal Republic of Germany before the European Court of Justice. He has been judge at the Court of Appeals. He is President of the German Association of European Communities Studies (Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration), managing board member of the German Association of European Law (Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Europarecht) and member of the Comité Directeur (as well as former General Secretary and Rapporteur Général) of the Fédération Internationale pour le Droit Européen (FIDE). He was Chairman of the European Research Training Group of the German Research Foundation on “Transformation and Economic Integration in Europe”. He pursued his studies at the universities of Göttingen, Berlin (FU), Tübingen and Cornell, N.Y. (USA), was scholarship holder of the German National Scholarship Foundation, passed the State Exams in Law in Baden-Württemberg, earned his doctorate (Dr.iur.) and habilitation (Dr.iur.habil.) at Tübingen University and was scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation. Prior to his appointment at Heidelberg in 1994 he was professor of law at the universities of Köln (Cologne) and Trier. Professor Müller-Graff has held several visiting professorships in other European countries (in particular in France, Belgium -Collège d´Europe-, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and Hungary), in the USA (Cornell, Georgetown) and in Asia (Nihon, Tokyo; Tongji, Shanghai).

Dr. Lena Hornkohl wrote her Ph.D. about European Competition Law and Civil Litigation with Prof. Müller-Graff and worked at Heidelberg University for 5 years. One of her main projects was the organisation of the Schule des Deutschen Rechts in Krakow and Kiev. She is teaching “Privatrecht I” in the summer school in Kiew since 2017. Mrs. Hornkohl is working as a lawyer in Brussels at the moment and will join the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law as a Senior Research Fellow in September 2020.

Dr. Johannes Reitzel is counsel at King & Wood Mallesons. Besides advising on employment law aspects of transactions, he gives ongoing employment law advice to corporate clients. Further, he advises directors, officers and board members on the conclusion, termination and modification of service agreements. Dr. Johannes Reitzel has gained extensive experience in his areas of competence while working for an international project developer and a German M&A boutique. Moreover he has managed complex termination procedures, has accompanied international and domestic transactions of great complexity and has given ongoing employment-law advice to companies for many years.

Sc.D. Olena Shablii since 1998 has been teaching translation studies and legal German at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (since 2012 at the Faculty of Law, Department of Foreign Languages). 2002 – 1st (candidate’s) dissertation ‘Interlingual Terminological Homonymy as a Problem of Terminological Lexicography and Translation Studies’; 2013 – 2nd (doctor’s) dissertation ‘Theoretical Bases and Methodology of German-Ukrainian Legal Translation’. She has published several books ‘Translation of Legal Texts’ (2008), German-Ukrainian Legal Translation: Methods, Problems, Prospects (2012), is co-author of ‘Weißbuch zur Reform der ukrainischen Juristischen Ausbildung: Deutsch-Ukrainische Erfahrungen’ (2015) and author of over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals. She was visiting professor and researcher at the Herder-Institute of the University Leipzig, Germany (2011), Bologna University, Italy (2014), Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany (2015), Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (2011, 2019). Since 2015 President of the NGO German-Ukrainian Jurisprudential Dialogue, coordinator of several German-Ukrainian projects (among them conferences and workshops on Reform of Ukrainian legal education, German-Ukrainian Legal Translation School, German-Ukrainian Legal Database etc.), member of GfdS (Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache e.V.), member of IATI (International Academy for Translation and Interpreting).

Dr. Ivan Yatskevych, Vice Dean, Associate Professor of the Department of Private Law Doctor of Philosophy (Law), Executive Secretary of Editorial Board of Professional Journal “NaUKMA Research Papers. Law”. The circle of research interests comprises theoretical and practical problems of labour law and social security law, European labour law, human rights law. The issues of legal guaranties of the right to work, labour rights as human rights, the issues of occupation and employment, the rights of persons with disabilities (particularly rights to social security and employment) belong to the core of research field. Bruno Striebel studied law in Heidelberg, Lisbon and Konstanz. He is an academic assistant to Professor Mueller-Graff since 2020. In this capacity, he participated at the European Law Moot Court in 2019 and was coach of the team the year after. In June 2022 he graduated from Heidelberg University with his first state exam. Between October 2022 and March 2023, he worked in the dispute resolution team of a renown law firm in Frankfurt. Since April 2023 he is a legal clerk at the Higher Regional Court Karlsruhe. Bruno Striebel already taught at the Summer School in 2021.

Dr. Torben Ellerbrok studied law in Münster and Geneva. After obtaining his first state exam in 2014, he was a research assistant at the Department for German and Administrative Law at the University of Heidelberg. In 2019 he obtained his PhD with a thesis about bylaws which was awarded by the German Federal Administrative Court. During his legal clerkship he spent stages at the regional court in Hamburg, at the University of Speyer and at the German Federal Constitutional Court. After three years of editing a new handbook for administrative law at the University of Heidelberg, in 2023, he commenced his work as an assistant professor (Juniorprofessor) at the Free University in Berlin. Torben Ellerbrok is interested in German and European public law.

After studying law at the University of Heidelberg, JProf. Dr. Jacqueline Lorenzen worked for several years as a research assistant at the Heidelberg University’s Institute for German and European Administrative Law and received a doctorate degree in the field of European Administrative Law. Her subsequent legal clerkship in the district of the Higher Regional Court of Munich was followed by postdoctoral activities at the Institute for German and European Administrative Law as well as in the interdisciplinary Thematic Research Network "Umwelten - Umbrüche - Umdenken" at the University of Heidelberg. As of April 2023, she was appointed junior professor at the University of Bonn, where she is working on issues of the law of sustainability and ecological transformation within the Transdisciplinary Research Area "Individuals, Institutions and Societies".

Dr. Claudia Heintthaler studied law with a focus on “Politics, Government, and Administration,” as well as European law, at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg from 2012 to 2017. After passing the First State Examination in 2017, she worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Public Law and European Law held by Professor Dr. Markus Ludwigs at the University of Würzburg until 2020, and earned her doctoral degree there in 2023. From 2021 to 2023, she completed her legal traineeship in the Higher Regional Court District of Hamm, including a placement within the Rule of Law Program Middle East and North Africa of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Beirut, Lebanon. Since January 2024, she has been a research associate at the Chair of Public Law, International Public Law, General Constitutional Theory, and Philosophy of Law held by Professor Dr. Bernd Grzeszick at Heidelberg University.

Dr. Robert Pracht studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Geneva. After passing his First State Examination in 2018, he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of German and Administrative Law at Heidelberg University. In 2021, he earned his doctoral degree with a dissertation on the relationship between the German Federal Constitutional Court and the European Court of Justice. During his legal career, he also spent time working at the German Federal Constitutional Court. Since 2023, Robert Pracht has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Finance and Tax Law. His research interests include German and European public law, particularly public finance and income tax law.

Dr. Daria Bohatchuk, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Law of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Her research interests include digital law, intellectual property law, international law, artificial intelligence, issues of the rule of law, constitutionalism and good governance. Dr Bohatchuk teaches a number of courses, including: - Legal Regulation of Digital Technologies: Practical Application Aspect; - Artificial Intelligence: Legal Issues and Legal Regulation in the EU; - Rule of Law and Constitutionalism: Current Issues; - Rule of Law and Public Administration; - Constitutional Jurisdiction.
