Legal Regulation of Digital Technologies: Practical Application Aspects
The academic course “Legal Regulation of Digital Technologies: Practical Application Aspects” is dedicated to the study of legislation in the field of digital technologies, covering a wide range of legal issues related to the legal regulation of innovation. The course primarily focuses on the legal regulation of digital technologies in the European Union.
Legislative solutions and public policy regarding digital technologies must be rooted in the foundations of law. These foundations can be found, first and foremost, in the principles and values of law. As part of the course, students will engage in discussions about the new opportunities, challenges and ethical concerns associated with the use of modern digital technologies, particularly in the areas of justice, public administration, law enforcement and LegalTech.
Students will also gain the practical skills necessary to support clients whose activities relate to digital technologies.
The discipline stems from the rapid technological development that is transforming all spheres and creating challenges for the legal system, as well as from the importance of regulating the digital technology sector and the necessity of aligning Ukrainian legislation with EU law.
Upon completing the course, students will have acquired the scientific foundation and practical understanding necessary to align Ukrainian legislation in the field of digital technologies with the European legal framework, and to implement the key reforms required for Ukraine’s path towards EU accession. Throughout the course, students will analyse EU legal acts designed to ensure the proper functioning of markets in the digital sector within the EU, including the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act, the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA), the Platform-to-Business Regulation (P2B Regulation), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Data Governance Act and the Data Act. Particular focus will be given to analysing the world’s first comprehensive legal act on artificial intelligence, the Artificial Intelligence Act, adopted in the EU, as well as other regulatory initiatives that address issues related to the use of AI systems.
The knowledge gained from this course will provide a competitive advantage not only within the Ukrainian legal market but also internationally.
