Family Law in Canada: Guest Lecture by Professor Rollie Thompson for Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Law Students
Professor D. A. Rollie Thompson, KC, one of Canada’s leading experts in family law, delivered an online guest lecture as part of the Family Law course at the Faculty of Law, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
Professor Thompson introduced students to the key features of family law in Canada, including the relationship between federal and provincial legislation, the structure of family courts, and the main categories of family law cases.
The discussion covered parenthood, marriage and common-law partnerships, as well as different approaches to resolving family disputes across Canadian provinces, particularly Quebec and Ontario.
Special attention was given to family violence and relevant case law, including the 2026 Supreme Court of Canada decision in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia.
Students actively participated in the discussion, asked questions, and explored various aspects of Canadian family law together with Professor Thompson.
We sincerely thank Professor Rollie Thompson for his longstanding collaboration, his annual contribution to the Family Law course, and his continued willingness to share his knowledge and professional expertise with Kyiv-Mohyla Academy students!
