Russia’s International Crimes in Ukraine and Their Legal Classification

On 27 January 2023, as part of the NaUKMA Research Days, the Centre for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at NaUKMA organised a panel discussion on Russia’s international crimes in Ukraine and their legal classification.

NaUKMA Associate Professors Dmytro Koval and Hayane Nuridzhanian, as well as PhD student Maksym Vishchyk, delivered expert presentations on the crime of genocide, certain war crimes, crimes against humanity, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, and crimes affecting property and natural resources.

The participants discussed the legal classification of these crimes and accountability for their commission. In light of the resolutions adopted by the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the prospects for accountability are becoming more tangible, while Ukraine’s criminal justice system continues to improve and align more closely with European standards.
